The Castle

An exceptional place to visit in Pietrapertosa is the castle area, which culminates at the top with the tower and fortress of Norman-Swabian origin. It is an area of about 3,000 square metres where the rock becomes pure beauty, forming a landscape that is unique in the world.

The evocative spectacle that envelops you as you walk through the area or visit the castle is one of the most beautiful in Basilicata and southern Italy. You can enjoy a 360° view of mountains, woods, impressive rocks, hills and valleys, which alternate and overlap. From the castle at the top of this area, you can experience the thrill of being projected between earth and sky.

The tower and military complex date back to Roman times and became important during the Norman period in the 9th century. It is located on the highest peak of the Lucanian Dolomites that surround the village, at the foot of which lies the upper part of the village, known as the Arabata district. The rocky complex forms a natural fortress that has always encouraged human settlement.

The Castle of Pietrapertosa is the highest point in the Basento River Valley, with a view that extends for many kilometres into the river valley, which explains its military role since ancient times.
